Emmelie de Forest represents a true Danish fairytale. All of a sudden, she burst onto the Danish music scene, winning the national Eurovision final with her song Only Teardrops with more than fifty percent of the votes. “It’s always hard to pick one specific memory that marks the happiest moment of your life, but I have to say that winning the national final of the contest is one of them,” Emmelie states. She became an overnight sensation, and international bookmakers have picked her as the frontrunner to win the international Eurovision Song Contest. “I’m so excited! I’m spending my time getting into shape and trying to get a good night’s sleep every single night. And other than that, I simply practice, practice, practice. I try not to listen to all the songs I will be competing against – I’m afraid it will make me nervous.” Although she did in fact win the national contest, she has never been a product designed to do so. Like her name suggests, she resembles a forest fairy – a natural child of the North, barefoot and with a sense of magic about her presence. “I’ve never really liked singing while wearing high heels or any kind of shoes. Being barefoot makes me feel connected to the ground, and it makes me feel more relaxed,” she explains. With her authentic personality and distinct voice, she represents true artistry, and at just 20 years old, she already has more than half a decade’s worth of experience as an artist. Much of this experience has been gained through her collaboration with the Scottish singer-songwriter Fraser Neill. Together the duo performs both their own material as well as innovative folk renditions of songs by artists as different as Nirvana and Johnny Cash. Having a Swedish grandmother, she is also very familiar with the country that hosts this year’s Eurovision Song Contest: “Much of my family still lives there, and I think of Sweden as my second home. Who knows if it might lend me a small home turf advantage?” No one knows who will win the Eurovision Song Contest, however, but if Emmelie de Forest does in fact win, it will be the fulfillment of her very own, spectacular fairy tale.
